Head of Curriculum

Wardinah Bahati or Dinah as she is fondly known, is the Head of Curriculum at White Lodge. She has a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and has done some foundational studies in Child Psychology and in Autism. Dinah has been in White Lodge since 2003. She started with teaching the younger age groups and was later a Principal in White Lodge for four years. Dinah also helped to develop and conduct the Parent and Child classes. She currently oversees a few aspects of the curriculum, including the Integration Programme and works collaboratively with the Principals at White Lodge to ensure the administration of the schools.

“I remember the first days of my novice teaching career, and how the search for a great school with personal touches and genuine interests in staff and children pulled me in different directions. Finding White Lodge was a destined journey that helped me to relate theory to practice, and see how children’s interests can be propelled through experiences and carefully planned goals. This journey is an emotional and enriching one. I believe that for young children, innate skills can be harvested through carefully planned learning experiences that integrate peer groupings and play-based activities which respect their developmental needs.

This role of Head of Curriculum at White Lodge encompasses a holistic overview and an array of challenges, rewards and opportunities. Walking these very grounds again – first as a novice teacher filled with ideals and energy, and now as a leader has allowed me the opportunity to see how global and organisational policies translate into best teaching practices. Seeing this process is exciting! We witness new ideas which are initiated by us at their infancy stages snowball into wonderful gigantic proportions by the time they are carried out with the children.

The role of an educator is an important one: it is multi-tiered and encompasses honourable responsibilities and meaningful purposes. It is an honour to take on this role and to share this passion with others in the field. My long term goals are to take on bigger roles in community-based projects, to work with children-at-risk and to make contributions to global and organisational policies.” – Wardinah Bahati (Dina)

From the age of 4, my favourite kinds of pretend play was always of me taking on the role of a teacher for my dolls. I picked up the strategies used by my own teachers and used them on the dolls. From then, my mother could tell where my future would possibly take me. True enough, here I am years later, reliving my childhood dreams in my everyday life with these amazing little beings called children. It is the laughter of children, their innate curiosity and the immense satisfaction gained from teaching which about my passion for children.

My first job right after the completion of my secondary education at aged 16, was in a preschool setting. It confirmed my childhood dream and I had no doubts then to pursue my career in enriching young lives. I completed my Diploma in Early Childhood and a Teaching Certificate in Speech and Drama. During my studies, I continued to work part time as a Speech and Drama teacher and a Montessori Enrichment Teacher; having held temporary teaching positions at various preschools during my school term breaks so that I may continue to build on my repertoire of experiences. I have gained numerous amount of meaningful experiences such as assisting on the launch of programmes, mentoring novice teachers, and organizing school events. I am a strong believer in live long learning, therefore I moved on to complete my degree in Early Childhood. My second passion consists of the Arts, both performing and visual arts as they allow me to express myself creatively. Thankfully, this industry also allows me to explore my second passion too. I am excited to bring with me my wide range of experiences, skills and passion to White Lodge where I will be able to grow further, professionally.

Most educators feel that it is our job to impart knowledge to children. On the contrary, I feel that I benefit as much as the children do, as we are continuously learning together. As educators, we are responsible for creating an environment that is conducive and safe for the child to explore. A learning environment where children feel safe and happy is an environment suitable for young learners to be motivated and flourish to their fullest potential as they explore the world around them. I feel that the best form of learning is through accidental learning and learning sparked off by children’s curiosity. There are no seven wonders of the world in the eyes of a child. There are seven million. (Walt Streightiff). When an interest is sparked off from within, a child is intrinsically motivated to learn. What is important is giving children a sense of autonomy through well thought choices, encouraging and empowering children to be independent thinkers and learners. Unplanned experiences are what make the child’s day so meaningful. I believe that an educator should take time to have fun and just play with the children and develop the child’s accidental learning.

I am truly privileged and thrilled to be a part of the White Lodge family. I look forward to creating the bond with parents, children and fellow educators as I share my experiences and passions towards a learning experience and environment that is meaningful and exciting for all.

“As an educator in the early childhood field, I will play an important role in the foundation years of the young children who come under my care. One of the best parts of the job is that even on bad days, I will always be cheered by the bright smiles of the children, their ever-loving hugs and their ability to draw me into their world with their meaningful conversations. These conversations are often an extension of what they have learnt in class. This demonstrates not only their awareness and understanding of the world but also their love for learning! It is a great joy to know we play a part in helping the children to shape their world.

After spending three years in the classroom, I am finally taking a step forward and will embrace my new leadership role as a Principal. I feel that being a Principal is like being a teacher. As a Principal we nourish, enrich, guide, and support our teachers. We help good teachers become better, better teachers become great, great teachers become outstanding.

I am thankful to White Lodge for providing me with the necessary skills and the opportunity to take on the role of being a significant professional in the East Coast team. My goal is to provide leadership and ensure the school’s success by forging and maintaining meaningful relationships with parents, children, teachers, and the community.”

Fiona’s undying passion for the literacy and young children is exemplified in her academic background as well as her previous working experiences. Upon graduation from Ngee Ann Polytechnic with a Diploma in Early Childhood Education, Fiona continued to pursue a Diploma in Special Education and Dyslexia Studies at the National Institute of Education. She was subsequently deployed to a government school where she worked extensively with children with Dyslexia. To further deepen her understanding in language and literacy, Fiona is also currently pursuing a part time degree in English and Sociology.

“As a professional who believes in the necessity for children to be expressive, I value and emphasize the importance of not only language development, but also other avenues of expression in young children. I view communication as an imperative tool for educators to facilitate children in learning and development. Apart from the ability for educators to create meaningful learning experiences for children, communication allows for educators to recognize and acknowledge the world seen through children’s eyes. With my love for children and language, I certainly hope to impart my passion for language as we work together in facilitating a child to discover and learn.

It is truly honourable to be part of the White Lodge family. I look forward to be working in close partnership with parents, teachers, children and the community. As a leader and advocate for young children, it is my commitment to create a safe and active learning environment where children’s potentials are maximised, and differences celebrated.”

Rachna Kewalramani is a Post-Graduate MBA, a Graduate in Commerce and a Diploma holder in Early Childhood Education. She started her career in the corporate sector and after the birth of her son, took on the role of a full-time Mom. Her innate love for being with children drove her to pursue a Diploma in Early Childhood Education. She has gathered invaluable experience in teaching children in schools in India and Singapore.

“I feel that being an early childhood educator is a unique profession. Children come to school feeling happy, secure and eager to learn and explore. A positive learning climate in a school for young children is a blend of many things. It is a school that respects children, a place where children receive guidance and encouragement from the responsible adults around them. It is an environment where children can experiment and try out new ideas without fear of failure. It is an atmosphere that builds children’s self-confidence so they dare to take risks. Above all, I believe that it is an environment that nurtures a love of learning. After working with schools in India and Singapore, I joined the White Lodge team. Coupled with my managerial skills, I wish to bring passion, creativity and a process-oriented approach in equal measure and thereby bring to life the philosophy and the vision of White Lodge – to give the children opportunities to discover and pursue their dreams. Educator and philosopher Maria Montessori once said, “The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say…….The children are now working as if I did not exist.”

Fairuz’s first career started when she was nineteen years old, where she was employed on a part-time basis in a Montessori centre. At time of her initial employment experience, she underwent a Diploma in Early Childhood Education (Teaching and Leadership). It would be five years later before she joined White Lodge. She started her employment as a vice principal and teacher at White Lodge Kindergarten, Upper Bukit Timah.
She taught the Pre Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes in Upper Bukit Tim up to recently when she moved to White Lodge, Loewen Gardens. She has taught the Wolf Pack class, which is a Primary School Preparation Programme, which provides Math, Phonics and Science Programmes. She recently completed her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, with a focus on Literacy. With these experiences and professional qualifications, she hopes to extend the various enrichment programmes available at White Lodge, Loewen Gardens.
“I remembered entering a centre during my vacation break when I was nineteen hoping to try a hand at being a teaching assistant. Throughout my years of novice teaching, I learned that each child is born with unique potentials which require stimulation in order to be revealed. As educators, we should nourish natural and positive learning experiences for children. We allow them ample time and much needed support in order for them to flourish. I believe that a safe and positive learning environment is crucial in helping the children to develop their self-confidence. Children should also be given encouragement to challenge themselves to reach his or her optimum potential. My biggest satisfaction is in seeing the children’s progress and celebrate their achievement. Their cheerful greetings and hugs bring joy and warmth.
As I part away from classroom setting, I am now taking a step forward in my professional growth. Being a Supervisor in the centre has presented me with new challenges and opportunities. Not only will I continue to work closely with the team of teachers, I will also work collaboratively with the parents. I hope to continue overseeing the many exciting enrichment programmes available at White Lodge and to extend the depth of their educational value and entity. As I begin this journey, I hope to continue build a closer relationship with and to inspire the children, teachers, parents, and community.”

“My career at White Lodge began eight years ago. Bearing minimal knowledge regarding nurturing and educating, White Lodge proved to be a environment which was conducive for constant self-improvement as I was surrounded by the Directors who acted as mentors and seniors professionals in the field, who were good role models. Furthermore, the knowledge imparted to me by the Principal whom I worked for has inculcated many values and lessons. My beliefs and practices in early childhood education are firmly rooted in what I have learned during those early years with White Lodge. I still apply these practices daily at work.

With a consistently motivating ‘family’; I grew to become an individual that believes in approaching children with love, trust and practical knowledge. I value the thought of being passionate for learning, discovering or creating something using imagination and skills. Aside from that, I’ve been given many opportunities to attend various courses to enhance my knowledge and better understand the field of early childhood by investing my time in the classroom.
I believe it is essential that I commit and dedicate all my efforts into moulding our young ones, as we are mouldable at our best when we are at our early years. At White Lodge, we’re firm believers of commitment. Therefore, I strive to provide excellent care to the children in White Lodge, providing a safe, happy and stimulating work environment for the children, teachers and caregivers.”
